About Sprint Velocity

Sprint velocity is a key metric for Scrum teams. Learn how to calculate, interpret, and use it effectively for better sprint planning and predictability.

To use this calculator, simply enter the committed and completed story points for your last 3-5 sprints. The tool will automatically calculate your average velocity, volatility score, and provide capacity recommendations for your next sprint.

  • Sprint Velocity is the average amount of work (in story points) a Scrum team completes during tracked sprints. It is calculated by: Total Completed Points ÷ Number of Sprints.

Velocity = Total Completed Points ÷ Number of Sprints
  • Average Velocity

The mean story points completed across all tracked sprints. Use this as a baseline for long-term capacity planning.

    Rolling Average (3 Sprints)

A more accurate predictor than overall average. It reflects recent team performance and adapts to changes in team composition or project complexity.

    Volatility Score

Standard deviation of your velocity. Lower scores mean more predictable sprints.

    • <5 = Excellent
    • 5-10 = Good
    • >10 = High Variability
    • Don't chase higher velocityA stable velocity is better than a high one. Focus on consistency, not increasing numbers.
    • Adjust for team changesIf team size changes or you lose/add members, expect velocity to shift temporarily. Reset your baseline.
    • Use it for planning, not performanceVelocity is a planning tool, not a performance metric. Never use it to compare teams or pressure developers.
